"Montrachet is a restaurant that I would gladly eat in every night," said New York Times critic Ruth Reichl in her three-star review. "Walking into this relaxed and low-key room has an instantly soothing effect. As you sit sipping wine it is easy to imagine that you are in Paris, in a high-class Left Bank bistro."
Yet this beloved restaurant could only exist in New York. Drew Nieporent opened Montrachet in Tribeca, naming it after what many consider the greatest dry white wine in the world. His dream was a casual yet elegant French restaurant where the food, wine and service were all at the highest level. Just weeks after its launch in 1985, Montrachet won three stars from the Times. Over the years, its kitchen has honed the talents of several renowned chefs, such as David Bouley and Debra Ponzek, and the restaurant has stayed true to its original objectives: pleasing downtown diners with excellent food and wine, warmly professional service and a relaxing ambiance.
Executive Chef Richard Farnabe combines classic French technique with modern flair, offering refined dishes that range from delicate (Roast Chicken with Braised Endives and Juniper Berries) to bold (Rack of Lamb with a Rosemary Crust) to earthy (Cote de Boeuf with Socca, Pommes Souffles). His food is complemented perfectly by the wine list. Montrachet's 16,000 bottle cellar earned a prestigious Grand Award from Wine Spectator, which recently enthused: "Montrachet offers more than a great list; it delivers the best wine experience in New York."
In 2003, Montrachet began inviting customers to bring special bottles from their own cellars on Mondays. BYOB night feels like a convivial party as people offer tastes to neighboring tables and enjoy the bonhomie of sharing good wine. Mondays are so popular that Montrachet is now spreading the cheer with "Bring One, Buy One" on Tuesdays through Thursdays.
