  • Rennie Harris returns to the New Victory Theatre with a new show featuring some of the innovators of hip-hop, including Pop Master Fabel, The Rock Steady Crew, the Mop Tops, and others. DJs mix current hits with jams from back in the day; a beatboxer keeps the rapid-fire rhythms coming with his oral orchestra of sounds; and b-boys and b-girls pop, lock, spin, and rock across the stage. This show is recommended for kids ages 6+.

  • Little Donkey is a puppet theatre show from Theater Terra of Amsterdam, Netherlands. This description is from the press materials: "After a surprise storm turns their town upside down, a plucky young donkey and an array of animal friends must work together to rebuild their home, jump start Momma Donkey's launderette, and recover one gigantic item of missing laundry-a sock of the dreaded, 30-foot-tall Marabou."   • This is a new show featuring the Umbilical Brothers-Shane Dundas and David Collins-a pair of physical theatre performers from Australia who are not in fact brothers but who have been touring the world with their zany shows for 15 years now. The Brothers fuse physical comedy with ingenious sound effects to create a warped world of juvenile insanity; they say they have found the way to make mime fun-by adding sound to it. The show is recommended for kids ages 10+; it's not just for kids, however.

  • Circus Oz returns to the New Victory for its fourth appearance with an all-new show, The Laughing at Gravity Tour. This description is from the advance materials: "Fueled by the rock & roll rhythms of an onstage band, a pink lemonade seller finds herself twisted in knots (literally); an accordion player in a bolero jacket thwarts off the oncoming advances of a BMX stunt biker for a bull; an orchestra's conductor lets his flight-prone upright bass get the best of him; and seven pole climbers race up and rocket down a 40-foot tower of terror." This show is recommended for all ages.

  • Chicago's Lookingglass Theatre Company presents this physical theatre adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. The show is performed in the round, with some of the seats on stage. Alice-that pugnacious explorer, demure deconstructionist young woman unfazed by Jabberwock-must make her way across an illuminated chessboard by outwitting the Red Queen, out-chatting the Mad Hatter, and out-maneuvering the bizarre but friendly Caterpillar. This show is recommended for ages 8+.

  • Lifeboat is a play by Nicola McCartney, based on the inspiring true story of Bess Walder and Beth Cummings. This summary is from the press release: "As Germany increased its attacks on Britain during World War II, a controversial program was enacted to transport British children to safer shores. Beth, Bess, and 90 other children boarded the S.S. City of Benares in the spring of 1940 and embarked on a trip that changed their lives forever. Two actresses portray the girls, their families, and friends on a simple set that strikingly frames each event: from quiet kitchen conversations to playful sibling squabbles to a horrifying torpedo attack amidst the dark, unnerving silence of the icy Atlantic." This show, from Catherine Wheels Theatre Company in Scotland, is recommended for kids 8+.

  • The Number 14 features six actors from Canada's Axis Theatre Company playing more than 60 larger-than-life characters who are sometimes goofy, occasionally elegant, and always hilarious. Somersaulting old ladies, ballet-dancing businessmen, and turbo-talking girl schouts all hitch a ride on one of Vancouver's real-life bus routes and capture the absurdity and diversity of city dwellers' daily commute. The show combines commedia dell'arte, puppetry, and music; it's recommended for kids ages 6+.

  • Chicago Shakespeare Theater and Milan's Colla Marionette Company collaborate on this new interpretation of Shakespeare's Macbeth. CST provides the voices and CMC provides a cast of intricately handcrafted characters in a version of the play that emphasizes the human and supernatural elements of the story. The show is recommended for kids ages 12+.

  • Ragamala is a music and dance theater company from Minneapolis. They blend the ancient Indian art of Bharatanatyam with contemporary dance to tell engrossing, physical tales rich with images of lush landscapes, colorful creatures, and powerful emotions. The show features Taiko drumming, a capella singing, and tradtional South Indian chanting. It's recommended for kids ages 6+.

  • Circus Inferno (starts May 18)


  • The Daredevil Opera Company from Ontario, Canada presents this new show which mixes physical comedy with cartoon-inspired sound effects. The show is about Lucky and Lady, an accident-prone duo who beomce the main attraction after the circus they expect to see is mysteriously postponed. Unable to resist the temptation of the spotlight, the curious couple stumbles on stage amidst an arsenal of pyrotechnic props and quirky characters. The show is recommended for all ages.
